How to Find Winning COD Products for Kenya & Tanzania: A Repeatable Research System
A step-by-step product research method for cash-on-delivery sellers in Kenya and Tanzania — where to look in the Ad Library, how to validate demand, the margin math and a scorecard you can copy.

Most COD sellers in East Africa don't fail because of ads or delivery. They fail because they test the wrong products, one after another, until the budget is gone. This guide gives you a repeatable research system — the same steps every time — so product selection stops being luck.
1. Know what a COD winner looks like before you search
A product that wins with cash on delivery in Kenya or Tanzania usually has these traits:
- It solves a visible problem — pain, discomfort, mess, embarrassment, wasted time or money.
- It can be shown working in 3–5 seconds of video. If you need a long explanation, the ad will be expensive.
- The customer understands it in one sentence. "Removes tough stains in seconds" beats "multi-purpose enzymatic cleaner".
- It feels like a deal at the selling price. In these markets most COD winners sell in the $20–35 range (≈ KSh 2,600–4,500 / TSh 50,000–90,000).
- Low product cost. Aim for products that cost $3–8 from the supplier so you have room for ads, delivery and confirmation.
- Hard to find in local shops. If it's in every supermarket, people won't wait for delivery.
Avoid as a beginner: complex electronics that need setup, products with sizes (high return rate), fragile items, and anything regulated (medicines, cosmetics with strong active claims).
2. Look where demand is already proven
You don't need to guess. Other sellers are already spending money to prove what sells. The trick is to look at markets that behave like Kenya and Tanzania: English-speaking, mobile-first, COD-heavy.
| Market | Why it's useful | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | Huge COD market, very similar buyer psychology | Products running weeks with many creatives |
| Ghana | Close price points, English ads | Health, beauty and home niches |
| Philippines | Massive COD volume, fast trend cycle | Gadgets and problem-solvers early |
| South Africa | Higher purchasing power — tests premium angles | Bundles and offers |
| Gulf (UAE, KSA) | Mature COD ecosystem | Beauty and wellness products before they spread |
3. Use the Facebook Ad Library the right way
Open the Meta Ad Library, choose All ads, select a country from the list above, and search.
Search by product keyword, not by "pay on delivery". Very few advertisers still write "cash on delivery" in their copy, so that search hides most winners. Search for what the product is or does: knee brace, posture corrector, car vacuum, stain remover, hair growth oil, lint remover.
Then filter and read the signals:
- Active ads only, media type Video.
- Running time. An ad live for 7+ days is interesting; 14–30+ days is strong evidence — nobody pays for a losing ad for a month.
- Number of creatives. When one page runs 5, 10, 20 versions of the same product, they are scaling it.
- Open the landing page. Confirm it's really COD: an order form with name, phone and address, no card payment. If it's a card checkout, the data is less useful for you.
- Click the advertiser's page → "See all ads". A seller with one winner usually has others. This is often where the best finds are.
4. Check the local market before you buy stock
Now search the same keyword in the Ad Library with the country set to Kenya or Tanzania:
- No one is selling it: opportunity, but higher risk — you are educating the market. Test with a small budget.
- 2–5 sellers active for weeks: demand is proven locally. You can enter with a better angle, a better offer or a better video.
- Dozens of sellers, same video everywhere: saturated. Only enter with a clearly different angle or bundle.
Also check that the product is legal to import, not too heavy or fragile for last-mile delivery, and available from a supplier who can restock quickly.
5. Do the margin math before anything else
A product that "sells" but doesn't leave profit after delivery is a trap. Calculate the profit per delivered order, because in COD you only get paid for what is delivered.
| Line | Example |
|---|---|
| Selling price | $28 |
| Product cost (landed, incl. shipping & customs) | − $6 |
| Delivery + confirmation fee per delivered order | − $5 |
| Ad cost per delivered order | − $10 |
| Net profit per delivered order | $7 |
Ad cost per delivered order = ad spend ÷ delivered orders (not ÷ leads). If you get 100 leads, confirm 70 and deliver 50, your real cost is spend ÷ 50.
Rule of thumb: selling price should be at least 4× the landed product cost. Below that, one bad week of ads wipes out your margin.
6. Score every candidate the same way
Give each product 0, 1 or 2 points per line. Test only products with 14+ out of 20.
| Criterion | 0 | 1 | 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visible problem solved | No | Partly | Clearly |
| Demo in 5 seconds | No | With effort | Instantly |
| Proof abroad (days running) | < 7 days | 7–14 | 14+ with many creatives |
| Local competition | Saturated | None | A few active sellers |
| Price vs. landed cost | < 3× | 3–4× | 4×+ |
| Weight / fragility | Heavy or fragile | Medium | Light and solid |
| Return risk (sizes, quality) | High | Medium | Low |
| Easy to restock | No | Slow | Yes |
| Bundle potential (2–3 pcs) | No | Maybe | Yes |
| Wow / emotional reaction | None | Some | Strong |
7. Turn the product into an offer
You're not selling a neck massager. You're selling relief from neck pain at home in 10 minutes. Before you launch, write down:
- The main pain in the customer's words (Swahili and English for Kenya, Swahili first for Tanzania).
- Three angles to test: the problem, the result, and the gift/convenience angle.
- The offer: 1 piece / 2 pieces with a discount / 3 pieces best value.
8. Keep a pipeline, not a single bet
Professional COD operators always have 20 or more candidates under observation and test 2–3 new products every week. Your sheet can be as simple as:
| Product | Ad Library link | Landing page | Days running | Creatives | Local competitors | Landed cost | Price | Score | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Statuses: Watching → To source → Testing → Winner → Paused.
Common mistakes
- Choosing products you like instead of products with proof.
- Calculating profit on leads instead of delivered orders.
- Ordering big stock before a test confirms the delivery rate.
- Copying the foreign video exactly — adapt the language, faces and price to the local market.
