Facebook Ad Costs in Africa vs Europe, the US and the Gulf: Why COD Sellers Are Moving

Why advertising is still cheaper in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Zambia than in mature markets, how to compare markets with real unit economics, and how to test a new country safely.

Many COD and dropshipping sellers are hitting the same wall: ad costs keep rising in their home market while margins shrink. That's why more and more of them are testing African markets. But "cheaper ads" alone doesn't make a business — you need to compare profit per delivered order, not CPM.

1. Why ads are cheaper in African markets

Ad prices are set by auction. In markets where fewer advertisers compete for the same audience, you pay less for the same reach. In Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Zambia:

  • Fewer brands are bidding on ecommerce audiences.
  • Large brands spend most of their budgets elsewhere.
  • Audiences are young and very active on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

The result: CPMs and costs per lead are usually a fraction of what sellers pay in Western Europe, the US or the Gulf.

2. Cheap clicks are not the whole story

A cheap lead is only valuable if it becomes a delivered order. Compare markets on this chain:

Example (illustrative) Saturated market New African market
Cost per lead $6.00 $1.20
Confirmation rate 75% 45%
Delivery rate 80% 50%
Cost per delivered order $10.00 $5.33

Confirmation (usually 40–55%) and delivery rates (usually 35–65%) are lower in African COD markets, but cheap leads can still make the cost per delivered order much lower. These numbers are only an example — your own results depend on the product, the creative and the operation behind it.

3. What actually decides your profit

  1. Product and offer: a strong product with a clear demo converts everywhere.
  2. Creative: local faces, local language and the price on screen.
  3. Confirmation speed: leads called within minutes confirm far more often.
  4. Delivery speed: the faster the delivery, the fewer refusals.
  5. Fees and returns: a model where you pay only for delivered orders, with free returns, protects your margin.

4. How to test a new market safely

  • Pick one product that already works in a similar market.
  • Launch 3–5 ad sets at a small daily budget in one country.
  • Send a small stock (enough for 2–3 weeks).
  • After 7–10 days, calculate your real profit per delivered order with our COD profit calculator.
  • Scale only if the numbers hold for a full cycle.

5. Which African market to test first?

  • Kenya: most mature, English + Swahili, good for most categories.
  • Tanzania: larger population, lower competition, Swahili creatives.
  • Ghana: West African entry point, English ads.
  • Zambia: early market, very little competition.
