Mobile Money and Cash on Delivery in Africa: M-Pesa, MTN MoMo and Airtel Money Explained
What mobile money is, which wallets customers use in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Zambia, how they pay the rider at the door, and what it changes for you as a COD seller who lives abroad.

1. What mobile money is
Mobile money is a wallet linked to a phone number. People put cash in or take it out at small agent shops, send money with a few taps or a short code, and pay bills and merchants — without a bank account or a card. In East Africa it is part of daily life, and it is spreading fast in West and Southern Africa.
For COD, this matters because many of your customers have no card that works online, but they do have money on their phone. Pay on delivery lets them buy online with the tool they already trust.
2. The main wallets in our four markets
| Country | Common wallets | Currency |
|---|---|---|
| Kenya | M-Pesa, Airtel Money | KES |
| Tanzania | M-Pesa, Airtel Money, Mixx by Yas | TZS |
| Ghana | MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, AirtelTigo Money | GHS |
| Zambia | MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, Zamtel Kwacha | ZMW |
Cash is still common too. A good COD operation accepts both cash and mobile money at the door.
3. How the customer pays at the door
- The order is confirmed by phone and the parcel leaves the warehouse.
- The rider calls the customer and arrives with the parcel.
- The customer checks the product and pays: cash to the rider, or mobile money to the account the delivery team gives.
- The payment is recorded against that order, and the parcel is marked as delivered.
Mobile money at the door means fewer "I don't have cash today" refusals, less cash carried by riders, and a payment that is easier to trace.
4. What it changes for you as a seller
- You do not need a local wallet or bank account. Your fulfillment partner collects the money in each country.
- Reconciliation is per order: each delivered order, its amount and its fees should be visible in your dashboard.
- You get paid in a form that works abroad — for example USDT, Payoneer or a bank transfer. Our guide on getting paid from Africa compares the options.
5. Tips for your ads and landing pages
- Write "Pay on delivery — cash or mobile money" near the price and the order button.
- Name the wallet people know: M-Pesa in Kenya and Tanzania, MoMo in Ghana and Zambia.
- Never ask customers to send money before delivery. It looks like the scams people fear and kills your confirmation rate.
- Show the total price in local currency, with no surprise at the door.
